NBC execs on ‘The Carmichael Show’ cancellation: “It was hard to find a stable audience”

After a question from a reporter, NBC execs talked about the cancellation of The Carmichael Show on Thursday at the TCA press tour.

 

NBC opted not to renew the show for a fourth season.

 

“I think the collective decision was maybe it’s best to let the show end. I have to say personally for all of us, it’s a really hard decision that wasn’t just made on one side of things. It was one of those difficult decisions that kind of live with you for a while that you don’t feel great about because you wish it had done better. This was the situation we found ourselves in,” said NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke.

 

Salke continued, “We loved the show and the cast and Jerrod from the start. It’s been a labor of love. Everyone was hoping the show would perform and grow. We saw a great stable audience slowly building with critical attention, but it remained in a challenging situation. We looked at the show with Jerrod, (and asked) what’s the long term plan? Is there a chance for real big success? Maybe it’s best to let the show end.”

 

Meanwhile, NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Blatt noted that the show had a good run as many NBC comedies don’t last past three seasons.

 

These statements come just as Carmichael’s ratings rose in its Wednesday night airing this week.
